Most powerful hatchbacks under R300,000 in South Africa

There aren’t a lot of powerful hatchbacks left in South Africa that you can buy for less than R300,000.

The cheapest hot hatch now goes for at least R454,900 these days, and most B-segment models will still set you back at least R350,000.

If you are on a tight budget, your best bet is either the Toyota Starlet or the Suzuki Baleno, as the duo are fitted with the same 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine good for 77kW and 138Nm.

If these nameplates aren’t to your liking, you’ll have to check out either the VW Polo Vivo, Kia Picanto, or Hyundai Grand i10, which all have around 61kw on tap.

The Vivo’s 1.4-litre powertrain means it’s the most powerful of the group with a higher torque stat of 132Nm, but all three will deliver similar performance.

The only other carmaker with a hatchback in this segment is Renault, which sells the compact Kwid with a 1.0-litre plant with 50kW and 91Nm.

While none of these figures are particularly high, it’s worth remembering that these are all small hatchbacks, meaning that a little bit of power goes much further than it does on a bulky SUV or bakkie.

Another advantage is that they all have very good fuel consumption, with the Kwid, in particular, averaging just 4.9l/100km on a combined cycle.
