10 new cars you can buy for the price of a used Toyota Fortuner

Motorists are moving away from the pre-owned market in favour of new models.

While the used car market has typically been seen as a haven for consumers during times of economic uncertainty, attitudes are beginning to change thanks to the recent influx of affordable new vehicles.

These new models, many of which hail from China and India, are able to cost-effectively compete with second-hand units from legacy automakers, and households have started to take advantage of this fact.

For example, the Toyota Fortuner is one of the most popular SUVs in South Africa, but even the cheapest version will now set you back R679,100.

It, therefore, comes as no surprise that many individuals will turn to the pre-owned market in search of a better deal.

According to AutoTrader’s latest monthly report, a used Fortuner sells for around R489,086.

These units tend to be six years old on average with a mileage of just over 100,000km.

It begs the question of whether it’s still worth paying for an older vehicle with a high mileage, or if its better to spend that same amount on a new model with a full warranty and service plan.

There are dozens of crossovers and SUVs that one can buy for less than R500,000, including hybrids and seven-seaters.

One notable option is the Mahindra Scorpio, which is an Adventure SUV comparable to the Fortuner that comes with a 5-year warranty and service plan.
