Every Toyota you can buy in South Africa under R400,000

There are six Toyota cars that you can buy in South Africa for less than R400,000.

However, only two of those options cost less than R300,000.

Toyota is the most popular car brand in South Africa, but like any automaker, its prices have steadily increased to the point where only a handful of units can be realistically described as affordable.

The Vitz costs just R178,800, and the Starlet starts at R268,300, but you’ll need to spend a minimum of R304,900 these days to afford an SUV like the Starlet Cross.

The Rumion people carrier asks for a minimum of R301,400, and you can expect to part with at least R342,700 to buy the Urban Cruiser.

Bakkie fans don’t have much choice either, as the only pickup Toyota sells for less than R400k now is the Hilux Single Cab, which starts at R361,700.

If you were hoping for a double cab, you’ll need to spend at least R528,800 for a five-seater Hilux in 2025.

What’s rather telling about this list is that, aside from the Hilux, all of the ‘affordable’ Toyota models on sale in South Africa are actually rebadged Suzuki units manufactured in India.

The Vitz is a rebadged Celerio, and while the Starlet is actually a Suzuki Baleno underneath.

Likewise, the Rumion is a Suzuki Ertiga, and the Starlet Cross is a Fronx, and the Urban Cruiser is a restyled Grand Vitara.

It highlights how Toyota’s core offerings, like the Corolla Cross, Hilux, and Rav4, are now comfortably mid to upmarket options for motorists, which speaks to the growing need for affordable cars under R400,000 in South Africa.
