South Africa’s car industry sold an incredible 54,700 units in September 2025, marking nine consecutive months of growing sales.
Naturally, the country’s top-sellers added to this total immensely, with the Toyota Hilux contributing 3,639 units all on its own. This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
This was followed by the VW Polo Vivo in second with 2,470, earning it the title of South Africa’s most popular passenger car.
The Hilux’s rival, the Ford Ranger, came next with 2,270 units, followed by the Suzuki Swift in fourth with 2,265 purchases.
Next up is the Isuzu D-Max with 2,054 sales, meaning the country’s “big three” bakkies all made it into the top five.
Outside of this exclusive group, the Toyota Corolla Cross came sixth with 1,891 sales, while the Starlet sold 1,629 units.
The Hyundai Grand i10 moved 1,451 examples, and the Toyota Vitz surged up to ninth place thanks to 1,446 customers.
Two Chinese entries are next, namely the Chery Tiggo 4 and Haval Jolion, which sold 1,377 and 1,215 units, respectively.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser landed in 12th place with 1,191 sales, while the Suzuki Fronx trailed behind with 1,191 units.
Kia landed the 14th spot thanks to 1,031 Sonet sales, and Nissan claimed 15th place with 1,013 Magnite purchases.
The last five spots in the top 20 were taken by the Toyota Fortuner, VW Polo, Omoda C5, Suzuki Ertiga, and Mahindra Pik Up, which added 842, 789, 784, 765, and 750 to the nation’s total.
Speaking of, the top 20 models sold a combined 29,926 units, representing 54.7% of all the vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
