Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo is the top dog in South Africa’s hatchback market.

The locally-made Vivo sold a grand total of 2,470 units this September, enough to make it the second most popular vehicle overall behind the Toyota Hilux.

Not far behind is the Suzuki Swift, which moved an impressive 2,265 units.

Third on the hatchback sales charts is the Toyota Starlet with 1,629 purchases, putting it ahead of the Hyundai Grand i10 in fourth place with with 1,470.

Another Toyota, the entry-level Vitz, then closed out the top five with 1,446 sales.

The Vivo’s more expensive brother, the Polo, came sixth with 789 units, and the Renault Kwid landed in seventh thanks to 669 sales.

A pair of Suzuki models came next, namely the Baleno and S-Presso, which saw 478 and 305 showroom victories, respectively.

Last but not least is the Hyundai i20, which sent 269 examples off to new homes last month.

In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 11,790 units, representing 21.55% of the 54,700 vehicles sold in South Africa this September.

Note that the Hyundai Grand i10 is sold in both hatchback and sedan formats, but Hyundai does not report body-specific sales figures.
