New Chinese bakkie launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC) has revealed the pricing for its new model selection in South Africa.

The Chinese automaker has officially relaunched in our market, following its quiet exit a few years prior.

“JMC has undergone a full strategic revitalisation, with the reintroduction of the brand locally including a plan to roll out 40 JMC dealerships nationwide by 2026,” said the company.

“The brand is re-entering the market with upgraded dealer standards, strengthened aftersales support, and a refined product line designed to meet the demanding needs of South African customers.”

Its vehicles will be locally distributed by Salvador Caetano Auto South Africa – the same company that handles GAC’s distribution.

JMC previously announced that it would initially sell two models – the Vigus bakkie and the Carrying Plus commercial vehicle – but didn’t disclose the pricing for either one.

However, the carmaker has finally revealed the price list for its catalogue, which starts at R299,900 for the Vigus (R260,783 excluding VAT).

JMC Vigus

The Vigus is a returning model to South Africa’s automotive landscape, available in three specifications with both single-cab and double-cab body styles.

The single cab features a 2.4-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 103kW and 310Nm, which is sent to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox.

JMC previously stated that it has a load carrying capacity of “close to a ton” and a braked towing capacity of 2,000kg.

Standard kit on the pickup includes central locking, electric windows, LED daytime running lights, front fog lamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, a steel spare wheel, chrome handles, and a rubberized cargo box with rope hooks and a guard rail.

It also comes with four speakers, Bluetooth, a USB port, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel, a central glove box, manual air conditioning, a 3.5-inch dot matrix instrument cluster, rear parking sensors, ABS, electronic brake force distribution, and a driver’s airbag.

Moving on, the double cab has a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel block with a slightly higher output of 104kW and 350Nm.

It has an eight-speed automatic shifter and is available in both 4×2 and 4×4 configurations – the latter of which features a differential lock.

The five-seater version also has a few extra features, including side steps, a rearview camera, a 9.7-inch infotainment screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and optional leather seats.

Each Vigus model is sold with a 5-year/100,000km warranty and a 5-year roadside assistance plan

The double-cab units also come with a 3-year/50,000km service plan, which is an optional extra for the two-seater.
