The South African car industry sold a whopping 48,983 units in December 2025, equivalent to approximately 1,580 units per day.
The Toyota Hilux is still on top to the surprise of no one, selling a total of 2,979 units. This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.
Toyota also claimed the second spot thanks to the Corolla Cross and its 2,766 sales, meaning the Japanese automaker has both the best-selling light commercial vehicle and passenger car in South Africa.
Ford slid into third place with the Ranger pulling 2,236 sales, and the VW Polo Vivo came fourth with 2,024 units.
A Chinese entry – the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – then closed out the top five with 1,658 purchases.
Outside this exclusive club, the Toyota Starlet sold 1,608 units while the Hyundai Grand i10 moved 1,563 units.
The Isuzu D-Max came eighth with 1,549 sales, and the Haval Jolion placed ninth thanks to 1,232 units.
Surprisingly, Suzuki’s first car on the list this time around is the Fronx crossover, which only managed to sell 1,170 units.
The Suzuki Ertiga came 11th with 1,000 sales, and the Swift saw a massive drop from third place down to 12th with 994 sales – a far cry from the 2,364 it moved in November.
Moving on, the Toyota Starlet Cross and Kia Sonet took the 13th and 14th spots with 969 and 888 units, respectively, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser finished in the top 15 with 843 sales.
The last five in the top 20 include the Omoda C5, VW Polo, Toyota Vitz, Nissan Magnite, and Suzuki Baleno, which added 785, 738, 704, 668, and 661 cars to the nation’s total.
In total, the top 20 cars sold a combined 27,035 units last month, representing 55.1% of all of the vehicles sold in South Africa.
