Vintage Cars South Africa (VCSA) in Pretoria has listed a 2009 Mk1 VW Citi Golf for sale for R1 million.
The Mk1 Golf is a limited-edition unit, with only 1,000 of these models built in 2009 to commemorate the end of the production line for a model that has been built locally since the 1970s.
According to its listing, this 2009 Mk1 Citi Golf only has 19km on its odometer and is “number 30” out of the 1,000 built.
Only 998 of these models were sold to the public, at R113,500 each, while the final two were put on permanent display at the VW museum in Wolfsburg, Germany, and at the VW AutoPavilion in Uitenhage.
VCSA – or Wat Swaai Jy? as they are also known – says that the car has never been registered and is being sold with its Volkswagen birth certificate, confirming its provenance and originality.
“It still presents exactly as it left the factory, with delivery mileage, original tyres, and serviced as required, despite never being driven,” reads the listing.
VCSA says this collector’s item is “not a car you buy to drive”, it is “a reference example, a time capsule, and a serious collector’s piece.”
“Cars like this rarely surface, and when they do, they disappear quickly into private collections.”
VW started producing the original Mk1 Golf in South Africa in 1978, after the model became an instant hit following initial imports in the mid-70s.
The original hot hatch was built in Uitenhage, in the Eastern Cape, and sold for merely R3,985.
Over the years, Golf production in South Africa continued, as did the model’s popularity.
To commemorate the success the hatchback had seen locally, and to celebrate its legacy, the Limited Edition Mk1 Citi Golf examples were built with lowered suspension, tinted windows and 15-inch alloy wheels.
Buyers could choose from one of two exclusive paint jobs, either Black Magic Pearl – the colour of the one currently on sale – or Shadow Blue Metallic.
Partial leather seats, a leather sports steering wheel and chrome foil side-stripes added to the unique profile of the Limited Edition Mk1.
These models also feature the original golf ball gear knob, Mk1-branded floor mats, and exclusive red stitching details.
Under the hood, the popular 1.6-litre motor remained, which, alongside its near-immortal 5-speed manual transmission, produced 74kW and 140Nm.
