Best-selling cars under R300,000 in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo is the most popular budget car in South Africa, as evidenced by the latest sales reports for January 2026.

The locally-made hatchback sold an impressive 2,060 units last month, making it the third best-selling vehicle overall behind the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.

Unsurprisingly, the second most popular wallet-friendly option was the Suzuki Swift, which moved R2,029 units.

This was followed by a Chinese entry, the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, in third place with 1,625 units.

The Toyota Vitz came fourth with 1,514, and the Hyundai Grand i10 closed out the top five with 1,374 units.

Next up is the Toyota Starlet in sixth with 1,372 sales, and the Suzuki Fronx in seventh with 1,161.

The Kia Sonet placed eighth thanks to 1,000 customers, while the Nissan Magnite secured the ninth spot with 811 units.

Last but not least is the Mahindra XUV 3XO, which managed to beat other affordable options like the Suzuki Baleno and S-Presso to claim a slot in the top 10 with 724 showroom victories to its name.

In total, the top 10 sub-R300,000 cars sold a combined 13,670 units, representing 27.3% of the 50,073 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
