The South African new car market remains on the up, starting the year off with two consecutive strong sales months, largely driven by purchases in popular segments, which include SUVs.
Despite South Africa’s favourite SUV falling out of the top five in last month’s sales, the shape remains hugely popular amongst local buyers.
According to a list compiled by The Citizen, based on Naamsa data, the country’s favourite SUV remains the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.
The compact Chinese SUV sold an impressive 1,809 units in February, quite some distance away from its nearest rivals.
In second place, the Suzuki Fronx helped its manufacturer hold onto its second place in the country’s top ten carmakers, selling 1,152 examples last month.
Joining them on the podium was another Chinese SUV, with the GWM Haval Jolion seeing 1,108 units leave showroom floors in February.
Rounding out the top five were the Toyota Corolla Cross with 1,022 units sold and the Kia Sonet with 911, as the Toyota Starlet Cross missed out narrowly with 907 units sold.
Two units that reported very similar sales numbers finished in seventh and eighth, with the Omoda C5 selling 824 units compared to the Nissan Magnite’s 821.
Closing out the top ten are the Mahindra XUV 3X0 with 794 units, and the Toyota Urban Cruiser, completing a trio for the Japanese brand, with 723.
Of the 53,455 cars sold in South Africa last month, the top ten SUVs made up nearly 20%, or 10,071 of all new car sales.
