Big update for South Africa’s new international airport

The architectural firm Boogertman + Partners Architects has been appointed to design the Cape Winelands Airport in the Western Cape.

The Cape Winelands terminal is set to become South Africa’s newest international airport, serving as an alternative to Cape Town International for those wishing to visit the region’s famous vineyards.

Boogertman + Partners Architects will play a central role in the site’s development, shaping its identity to to provide a unique passenger experience to visitors.

The firm will also ensure that the airport’s design is reflective of the Cape Winelands area while meeting all the requirements of a modern aviation hub.

“This milestone represents continued momentum as the project advances through its next phase of development,” it said.

Boogertman + Partners, which is one of the largest architectural practices on the African continent, will collaborate with AMD.Sigma, a strategic airport development company based in Berlin.

“Together, they combine international expertise with deep local knowledge, insight, and proven capability,” said the Cape Winelands Airport’s management.

The ambitious project will establish a new airport city precinct 13km northeast of Durbanville on Lichtenburg Road.

The airport will be built on the site of the existing Fisantekraal Airfield, functioning as a new private airport facility for the province.

It is meant to support economic growth for the City of Cape Town and the surrounding winelands, enhancing regional travel and attracting new investment.

The airport’s long-term plan includes the construction of a new boutique terminal, runway infrastructure, and upgrades to airside systems.

It also aims to improve cargo and logistics operations and establish a modernised general aviation precinct.

The development is expected to require an initial investment in the realm of R8 to R10 billion in Cape Town.

Once completed, the site will be able to sustain an estimated 35,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs over the first 20 years of operations.

South Africa’s newest international destination

Nicholas Ferguson, Managing Director of RSA Aero, owner and operator of Cape Winelands Airport, said that the ultimate goal of the project is to enshrine the location as an end destination for travellors.

One of the major benefits of the new site is that it will function as an alternative to Cape Town International, which is struggling to keep up with record-high visitor numbers.

However, Cape Winelands will be far more than a spare terminal to take on additional visitors to the region.

“Our vision is for Cape Winelands Airport to be a destination in its own right, a gateway that reflects the character, beauty, and heritage of the region,” said Ferguson.

He said that the appointment of Boogertman + Partners marks an important milestone for the site’s development.

It followed the key strategic partnerships with Growthpoint Properties and WBHO Construction at the end of 2025.

André Wright, Director at Boogertman + Partners, said the group is excited to begin designing the new airport.

Wright echoed Ferguson’s sentiment, stating that the Cape Winelands Airport will be the new gateway to the region, setting new standards for design innovation in the country and on the continent.

The architectural vision is to have the buildings blend with the natural topography of the area’s idyllic agricultural surroundings.

The main terminal has been envisioned as a large glass-and-steel structure that appears to rise from the ground, matching the hilly landscape.

“Our mission is to deliver a world-class, human-centred design that is contextually grounded, socially impactful, and environmentally responsible,” said Wright.

“The design of Cape Winelands Airport is guided by an ethos of environmental stewardship, aiming to be one of the greenest airports in the world.”
