Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

Bakkie sales dropped sharply in April 2026, likely due in part to the recent surge in diesel prices.

The Toyota Hilux is still on top, as expected, but sales declined from 4,118 units in March to 2,955 units in April.

This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.

It’s a similar story for most of the pickups in the top 10, as the Isuzu D-Max dropped from second to third place with 1,045 sales, compared to 3,008 units the month prior.

The Ford Ranger’s sales actually remained relatively stable at 2,013, allowing it to take the second spot from Isuzu.

Fourth place also saw a change, as the Mahindra Pik Up was usurped by the GWM P-Series.

The P-Series sold 588 units, while the Pik Up sold 563.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 79 came sixth with 451 purchases, which was followed by the VW Amarok with 399.

Eighth place went to the Nissan Navara with 315 sales, and the JAC T-Series claimed the ninth spot thanks to 270 customers.

Last up is the Foton Tunland, which sold 205 units last month.

In total, the top 10 bakkies sold 8,804 units, representing 18.3% of the 47,979 vehicles sold in South Africa in April.

For reference, in March the top 10 models sold a combined 12,747 units, meaning that sales dropped 30.9% month-on-month.

One other interesting fact to point out is that BYD has finally started reporting its sales figures to Naamsa, revealing that the Shark 6 sold 108 units.
