SUVs taking on the new Ford Everest in South Africa

Ford’s latest model refresh introduced an all-new entry-level Everest – the Active – which replaces the outgoing XLT derivative.

The Active’s price tag is R128,000 less than that of the old entry-level model, putting the Everest in a new price range, with all-new rivals.

The new model is fitted with a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder single-turbo diesel engine that produces 125kW and 405Nm, a powertrain exclusive to this trimline, and a choice between a 4×2 or 4×4 setup.

The 4×2 is equipped with a terrain management system and four driving modes – Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, and Slippery – while the 4×4 adds two more settings for Mud/Ruts and Sand, as well as a locking rear differential.

The SUV features 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic LED headlights, body-coloured bumpers, black roof rails, and side steps, with underbody protection added to the 4×4 version.

Inside, the Everest Active is fitted with sevel cloth seats, with eight-way electronic adjustment for the driver and four-way manual adjustment for the front passenger.

It features with keyless entry and start, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic climate control, a wireless charging pad, an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Assisting the driver is adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, lane centering, lane-keep assist, driver alert monitoring, ABS, electronic stability control, front and rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.

Despite the lower entry-point, the cheapest Everest derivative still demands a R825,000 price, as it retains its status as a premium offering.

However, it does mean that the American SUV has a host of new competition at that price-point, while maintaining its evergreen rivalry with the Toyota Fortuner at every trimline.

New rivals include some top-spec Chinese offerings, including the Leapmotor C10 REEV, and the plug-in hybrid Chery Tiggo 9.
