Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

May 2026 proved to be an excellent month for hatchback sales in South Africa, likely driven by growing demand for affordable, fuel-efficient models in the wake of recent petrol price hikes.

The top choice last month was the VW Polo Vivo, which sold an impressive 2,335 units.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.

This was followed by the Hyundai Grand i10, which overtook the Suzuki Swift to claim second place with 1,829 units.

The Swift wasn’t far behind, however, taking the third spot thanks to 1,588 customers.

Next up is a pair of Toyota models, the Starlet and the Vitz, which sold 992 and 881 units, respectively.

The VW Polo came sixth with 713 purchases, and the Renault Kwid landed in the seventh spot with 444 sales to its name.

The Hyundai i20 sold 432 units, earning the eighth spot, and a relatively new entry, the Tata Tiago, came ninth with 408 sales.

Last up is the Suzuki Baleno, which added 386 sales to the nation’s tally.

In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 10,008 units, representing 19.6% of the 51,071 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
