New Mitsubishi Triton bakkie goes on sale in South Africa – Pricing and features

Mitsubishi has officially launched the new Triton Bi-Turbo in South Africa.

The Bi-Turbo is positioned as the flagship of the Japanese automaker’s bakkie series, offering considerably more power and torque, as well as a more advanced four-wheel-drive (4WD) system.

It also has new features and several exclusive cosmetic details intended to give the vehicle a sportier appearance than its peers.

“We are excited to welcome the Triton Bi-Turbo to our local line up, offering additional performance, refined driving dynamics and advanced technology,” said Lerato Nonyane, General Manager: Product & Marketing at Mitsubishi Motors South Africa.

“The new additions to the Triton range have been done while retaining the product’s value for money characteristic, with extremely competitive pricing given the additional features and technology that are included as standard.”

The Bi-Turbo is now available at a starting price of R959,990.

Mitsubishi has also updated the GLS models with a new, darker exterior.

Performance

The new Triton uses a 2.4-litre diesel engine just like the rest of the series; however, the two-stage turbocharger has raised its power and torque stats.

While the standard models produce 135kW and 430Nm, the Bi-Turbo generates an additional 15kW and 40Nm to reach a new total of 150kW and 470Nm.

“The Bi-Turbo setup comprises of a smaller turbine that provides immediate low-speed response, effectively reducing lag, while a second larger turbine sustains high-end boost,” explained the carmaker.

“The Triton Bi-Turbo offers enhanced acceleration as well as improved power and torque outputs across the entire speed range.”

The other important mechanical change concerns the wheel configuration, as the Bi-Turbo is exclusively sold with the brand’s Super Select II 4WD system with a rear differential lock.

“One of the key advantages of Super Select II is its ability to seamlessly adapt to changing conditions,” said Mitsubishi.

“Unlike conventional part-time 4WD systems, Super Select II allows the driver to select 4H on the move at speeds of up to 100 km/h, giving added confidence when the road surface becomes wet, slippery or unpredictable.”

“In heavy rain, on wet tar, gravel or other low-grip surfaces, 4H distributes drive between the front and rear wheels, helping support traction, stability and driver confidence.”

Gear changes are handled by a six-speed automatic transmission, and the company has tweaked the suspension and handling to improve comfort and steering precision.

The Triton has a 3,500kg towing capacity and a 1,000kg payload capacity.

Fuel consumption works out to 8.4l/100km.

Features

The Bi-Turbo differentiates itself from the other models with new standard fittings, including roof rails, a styling bar, heated side mirrors, and an assisted tailgate.

It follows the brand’s Dynamic Shield design concept, giving it a three-dimensional front grille, fenders, and lower protector.

The daytime running lights comprise three L-shaped LED lights, which contrast with the T-shaped taillights at the back.

Inside, the new Triton features a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob, as well as synthetic leather seats with a suede knit and quilting.

The dashboard is decked out with a 7-inch digital driver display, and a 9-inch infotainment screen with a six-speaker stereo and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Another notable inclusion is the Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing Suite, which adds Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic High Beams, Forward Collision Mitigation with pedestrian detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree camera system.

To touch on the GLS models, the update has added a dark material finish to the fog lamp bezels, door handles, side steps, and rear gate handle.

“The front bumper garnish, rear bumper, door mirrors and 18-inch alloy wheels now feature a metallic black look, while the inner housing of the rear combination lamps has also been blacked out,” said the company.

“These updates give GLS models a more assertive appearance, with no change to pricing.”
