10 most fuel-efficient petrol cars you can buy in South Africa

Motorists in South Africa are once again facing uncertainty regarding upcoming fuel price adjustments, as the war between the US and Iran escalates in the Middle East.

Crude oil prices jumped from a low of $68 per barrel at the start of July up to $90 per barrel last week, which has all but eradicated the fuel price cuts we expected for August.

If the fuel price outlook follows the same trend as it did earlier this year, when crude oil prices hit $120 per barrel, many South Africans may start to consider what it is they drive and pivot towards more efficient vehicles.

This move is also not a difficult one to make, as most fuel-efficient vehicles sold locally are some of the country’s cheapest offerings, including the Suzuki Celerio, Toyota Vitz, and Renault Kwid.

What makes these so efficient is their small motors with low power outputs, making them ideal city-runner options, and not necessarily the best choice for someone who uses major highways to commute daily.

However, the exceptions here are the Audi A1 Sportback and the VW Polo Vivo GT, which are closer to being hot hatches than budget options.

That being said, both of these maintain a very respectable fuel consumption figure of 4.8l/100km, despite being more powerful than most of South Africa’s most frugal choices.

This is thanks to their turbocharged 1.0-litre blocks, which produce very similar outputs of 85kW and 81kW, respectively, as well as identical torque figures of 200Nm.

As a result, these are also the most expensive options in the top ten most efficient cars in our market, with the Audi demanding at least R530,900 and the VW retailing for R363,300.

By contrast, the cheapest car on the list is South Africa’s cheapest offering – the R178,799 Renault Kwid – which is slightly less efficient than the German hatches at 4.9l/100km.

While its price and fuel economy are very attractive, the Kwid does lack power and features over the A1 and Polo Vivo, with its naturally aspirated motor producing only 50kW and 91Nm.
