New 10-minute driver’s licence renewal centre for South Africa’s richest city

The Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela unveiled the modernised Gautrain Sandton Station Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) this week, where motorists can renew their licences in 10 minutes.

The new centre is the seventh such facility in the province and marks another milestone in Gauteng’s drive to modernise public services and improve access to licensing services.

Located at the Gautrain Sandton Station, the state-of-the-art facility aims to redefine the licensing experience for City of Johannesburg motorists by delivering greater convenience and efficiency.

The Smart Driver Licence Testing Centre offers a comprehensive range of driver and motor vehicle licensing services.

These include the renewal of driving licences for all licence codes, duplicate driving licences, applications for Professional Driving Permits (PrDPs), changes of personal particulars, payment of AARTO infringements, motor vehicle licence disc renewals, vehicle registration and licensing, and changes of vehicle ownership.

According to the provincial department, these have been designed to provide faster, more efficient and customer-centric services by bringing essential licensing services closer to where residents live, work and commute.

“The centre also reduces waiting times while improving convenience and accessibility,” it added.

During the launch on Wednesday, 29 July, the MEC said the opening of the Sandton Smart DLTC demonstrates the provincial government’s commitment to building a modern, efficient and responsive public service.

“We are handing over this facility to the people of Gauteng for your benefit and convenience,” said Diale-Tlabela.

“We encourage you to make full use of the services available here, whether it is renewing your driver’s licence, your motor vehicle licence, or accessing other licensing services.”

She added that the facility forms part of the province’s commitment to growing Gauteng into a province that delivers modern, efficient and accessible government services to all its residents.

Open on Saturdays

The Sandton Smart DLTC operates from 08:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays, to accommodate working residents who require flexible access to government services.

Other Smart Driver Licence Testing Centres around the province keep the same hours.

These are the Umphakathi Mall, Denlyn Mall, Atteridgeville Mall, Protea Glen Mall, Maponya Mall and Gautrain Midrand Station.

The smart licensing centres use the latest technology to streamline application and renewal processes, eliminating long waiting times by cutting out unnecessary paperwork.

Their strategic locations at shopping centres and Gautrain stations also make government services more accessible and convenient for residents across Gauteng.

“The Smart DLTC model incorporates advanced digital enrolment technology and cashless payment systems, enabling licence renewal transactions to be completed in approximately 10 minutes,” the department noted.

“The centres operate strictly on an appointment basis, eliminating the need for intermediaries and promoting transparent, corruption-free service delivery.”

The province has also deployed law enforcement officials at these facilities to uphold integrity and ensure compliance with licensing regulations.

According to the MEC, the launch of the centre advances the Gauteng Provincial Government’s “growing Gauteng together” vision through the Smart Mobility Programme, which leverages technology to improve transport services.

Beyond this, it also supports her department’s service delivery accelerator, which is aimed at expanding access to licensing services in underserved communities and townships.
