The small and affordable cars selling like hotcakes in South Africa

Hatchbacks are still incredibly popular in South Africa thanks to their relatively affordable price tags, with several models that cost less than R300,000.

The top-seller in July 2026 was, unsurprisingly, the VW Polo Vivo, which moved a grand total of 2,513 units.

This makes it the best-selling passenger car in the country and the second best-selling vehicle overall, only falling behind the Toyota Hilux.

This is according to a report by The Citizen, based on NAAMSA data.

South Africa’s second favourite hatchback proved to be the Suzuki Swift with 1,916 units, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,551 sales.

Two Toyota models, the Starlet and Vitz, then closed out the top five with 1,453 and 855 sales, respectively.

The VW Polo landed the sixth spot thanks to 756 customers, and a relative newcomer, the Tata Tiago, came seventh with 587 sales.

Hyundai claimed the eighth slot thanks to the i20 and its 548 sales, putting it ahead of the Suzuki Baleno in ninth place with 473 units.

Last but not least is the Renault Kwid, the cheapest car in the country, which sold 399 units.

In total, the top 10 hatchbacks sold a combined 11,051 units, representing 19.14% of the 57,708 vehicles sold in South Africa last month.
