These are the cars to buy if you want an easy time reselling it later
The Ford Ranger is the best car to buy in South Africa if your primary concern is reselling it further down the line.
This is according to new data from AutoTrader’s Mid-Year Industry Report, which tracks the fastest-selling models in the pre-owned market between January and June 2026.
One of the key metrics highlighted in the report is “Stock Velocity,” referring to the time it takes a dealership to sell a car within a set period.
“This metric directly influences a dealership’s ability to turn over stock and manage cash flow in the used-car market,” it said.
“Faster Stock Velocity means cars sell quicker, reducing the time they remain on the lot, lowering
costs, and boosting profit throughput.”
AutoTrader noted that a high Stock Velocity ensures that dealer inventory stays current and in line with demand.
This metric is influenced by several factors, including the value of the car, the brand’s popularity, and overall market conditions.
In the first half of 2026, the industry average rate to sell a car was 37 days, though this figure fluctuated from month to month.
These were the time-to-sell averages for cars listed by dealerships between January and June 2026:
- January – 42 days
- February – 37 days
- March – 32 days
- April – 35 days
- May – 37 days
- June – 37 days
January proved to be the most difficult month, as cars received by dealerships took an average of 42 days to sell, likely because consumer spending drops at the beginning of the new year after the expensive holiday season.
Demand picked up again in February with a shorter turnaround time of 37 days, which dropped even further to 32 days in March, indicating this is a good time of year to sell one’s car.
Fastest-selling models
Closely related to Stock Velocity is the fastest-selling metric for individual models, which provides insight into the type of cars that spend the shortest time on the market before being sold.
This gives motorists and dealers a good sense of what cars are popular and are likely to retain their value for longer.
However, the challenge with this metric is that it is influenced by scarcity, and sales velocity is not the only factor affecting demand.
Below is AutoTrader’s list of the top 10 fastest-selling second-hand cars in South Africa. Bear in mind that days-to-sell is not the only factor determining a model’s rank on the list; a larger sample size is also an important indicator of popularity.
| Rank | Model | Days to sell | Qualifying sales |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ford Ranger | 36 | 9,012 |
| 2 | Toyota Hilux | 27 | 7,011 |
| 3 | VW Polo Vivo | 28 | 5,644 |
| 4 | VW Polo | 34 | 5,602 |
| 5 | Suzuki Swift | 28 | 3,824 |
| 6 | Toyota Fortuner | 27 | 3,167 |
| 7 | Toyota Corolla Cross | 30 | 2,935 |
| 8 | Isuzu D-Max | 37 | 2,659 |
| 9 | Hyundai Grand i10 | 29 | 2,591 |
| 10 | Toyota Starlet | 34 | 2,330 |
Unsurprisingly, this list closely resembles the list of the best-selling used cars in South Africa, since both lists are an indication of popularity with buyers.
The best-selling cars on AutoTrader over the six-month period were as follows:
- Ford Ranger
- Toyota Hilux
- VW Polo Vivo
- VW Polo
- Suzuki Swift
- Toyota Fortuner
- Toyota Corolla Cross
- Isuzu D-Max
- Hyundai Grand i10
- Toyota Starlet
Bakkies remain a firm favourite with Mzansi motorists, though entry-level hatchbacks like the Hyundai Grand i10, Suzuki Swift, and VW Polo Vivo have seen a massive surge in popularity over the last few years as households shift down-market in search of more affordable options.
