R800 extra to own a Toyota Corolla Cross in South Africa
Owning an entry-level Toyota Corolla Cross Xi costs R767 per month more than it did a year ago, as the car’s price increased, interest rates rose, and petrol prices skyrocketed.
The same can be said of the top-spec Corolla Cross Hybrid XR, which costs R723 per month more to own than it did in 2025, which is a smaller increase purely thanks to its lower fuel usage.
The Japanese crossover SUV is South Africa’s favourite new energy vehicle (NEV) by a mile, with the XS, XR, and GR-S variants occupying the entire podium of hybrid sales in 2026, according to Cars.co.za.
While the Corolla Cross in its various hybrid (HEV) guises is by no means the cheapest NEV option in our market, Toyota’s local popularity and reputation certainly help drive sales, even when their prices are hiked.
Toyota increased the price of the popular crossover by around R10,000 across the range – both internal combustion and HEV – since last year.
At the same time, the prime lending rate has trended in the wrong direction, increasing monthly repayments alongside the base price increase, yet petrol prices have affected the cost of ownership most.
In the last 12 months, between October 2025 and September 2026, 95-octane petrol prices increased 25%, rising from R21.63 per litre at inland to R26.92 per litre before the next round of price increases.
If petrol reaches record highs as expected when prices are adjusted next week, owning the Japanese crossover could be R1,000 more expensive than a year ago.
The cost of financing the Corolla Cross in its base trim has increased by R269.80, from R8,915.67 to R9,185.47 per month on a 5-year loan with no deposit or balloon payment.
Refuelling the Japanese crossover twice a month – to account for an average monthly driving distance of around 1,500km – costs R497.26 more, increasing from R2,033.22 to R2,530.48.
Accounting for the R10,100 price increase in the base model’s price, the total monthly cost of owning a Corolla Cross right now has increased 7.01%, from R10,948.89 to R11,715.95 per month – R767.06 more.
It should be noted that this does not include costs like insurance, maintenance, or optional extras, which can easily add another few thousand rand per month to the total.
That said, Corolla Cross buyers should consider insuring their vehicle, due to the hijacking risk the vehicle carries.
Insuring the Corolla Cross is a good idea

While the cost of owning the Japanese crossover SUV has already increased significantly in the last year, buyers need to take insurance seriously, since the vehicle has become a hijacking target in South Africa.
Discovery Insure now considers the Toyota a high-risk vehicle for hijackings, according to an email sent to the company’s Corolla Cross customers.
The insurer, one of the biggest in South Africa, said it reviewed its claims data and identified a significant increase in theft and vehicle hijacking trends involving the models.
It said it regularly does this to ensure customers stay protected and their cover remains appropriate and sustainable.
“Our latest analysis shows a significant increase in vehicle theft trends affecting certain vehicle types and locations,” said Discovery.
“Using data insights, we’ve identified vehicles with a higher risk of theft and hijacking.”
Its findings were backed by private vehicle tracking and security data, which found criminals have been targeting the vehicle since its launch in 2021.
To counter this rise in thefts, Discovery made it compulsory for certain policyholders, such as owners of the Corolla Cross 1.8 XR, to install two Crowd Search Sensors.
These devices use wireless tracking technology linked to Discovery’s recovery network, improving the chances of recovering a stolen vehicle.
The insurer warned that customers who fail to install and activate the two sensors within the specified notice period could lose their theft and hijacking cover.
“If the devices are not installed, activated, and in working order by the end of the notice period, your plan may be amended to exclude theft and hijacking cover for the affected vehicle(s),” it said.
