Two new luxury SUVs launched in South Africa – Pricing and features

Volvo has updated its XC60 and XC90 model line-up for 2027 by including two new derivatives and keeping pricing unchanged for the existing range.

The two new models will feature the Swedish automaker’s redeveloped T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain and slot into the existing line-ups as “Core” derivatives.

“The 2027 model year XC60 and XC90 reflect where our plug-in hybrids are heading,” said Vusi Machie, Product and Pricing Manager at Volvo Car South Africa.

“The Core derivatives give more customers a way into a Volvo plug-in hybrid without compromising on the safety, design and everyday usability the XC60 and XC90 are known for.”

According to Volvo, the T8 PHEV system is more efficient and produces fewer emissions, and supports compliance with upcoming Euro 7 requirements while remaining fully compatible with South African fuel quality standards.

While announcing the upgraded powertrain and new derivatives, Volvo omitted any information about the features in the new XC60 and XC90, likely meaning they remain largely unchanged.

A new powertrain

At the heart of the new models and their upgraded powertrains is a Miller-cycle petrol engine, designed to work alongside a modern electrified powertrain, pairing the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with a powerful electric motor.

The T8 system integrates electrification, turbocharging and new variable valve timing to balance efficiency and performance, resulting in lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions than previous models.

Volvo rebalanced the system, with the petrol engine now delivering less peak power and torque than last year’s models.

The Swedish carmaker also upgraded the rear electric motor, boosting output from approximately 108kW to 116kW.

The combined system output is significantly lower in the new generation – dropping from 340kW to 299kW in the 2027 derivatives, while torque remains largely unchanged, but with more supplied electrically.

As a result, drivers can expect better low-speed acceleration and improved electric-only performance, while also benefiting from a smoother transition between electric and petrol power.

The 2027 T8 models will keep the same 18.8kWh battery and eight-speed automatic transmission with electrified all-wheel drive.

The new XC60 and XC90 will also retain the previous year’s electric-only range and their combined fuel consumption of 1.4l/100 km and 1.5l/100 km, respectively.

The MY27 XC60 T8 PHEV offers an electric-only range of up to 81km, while the XC90 T8 PHEV offers an electric-only range of up to 84km.
