Bakkie sales soared in South Africa in September 2026, with the top 10 models accounting for nearly a fifth of the industry’s total last month.
The Toyota Hilux is still sitting comfortably atop its pedestal as the undisputed king of the pickups, selling 3,769 units in 30 days.
This is according to a report by Cars.co.za, based on industry sales data from Naamsa.
Second place, meanwhile, went to Isuzu, which managed to overtake Ford with 2,551 sales compared to the Blue Oval’s 2,502.
Outside of the big three, the Mahindra Pik Up came fourth with 521 sales, and the GWM P-Series is still in the fifth spot thanks to 517 customers.
VW’s Amarok moved 430 units last month, and Toyota’s Land Cruiser 79 claimed the seventh spot with 419 sales.
The Nissan Navara, on the other hand, has fallen out of the top 10 entirely, replaced by the JAC T-Series in eighth place with 255 sales.
The last two to sneak into the top 10 were the Mahindra Bolero with 226 sales, and the Peugeot Landtrek with 207.
The Navara’s absence is notable, given it used to be a regular feature in the top 10. However, the company recently sold its factory in Gauteng, which produced the Navara, to Chery.
This has likely had a detrimental effect on the Navara’s sales, either due to low stock or to the factory sale, which has led to lower consumer confidence in the brand.
In total, the top 10 bakkies sold 11,397 units, accounting for 18.48% of the 61,645 vehicles sold in South Africa in September.
