The cars you can afford on the average salary in South Africa in 2026

The average monthly salary in South Africa is roughly R30,000 per month, which is only enough to afford an entry-level car from most manufacturers.

Stats SA recently published its latest Quarterly Employment Survey for the second quarter of 2026, revealing that average earnings increased to R30,611 per month by May 2026.

This is a 4.1% year-on-year increase from the R29,402 recorded in May 2025, and a 2.6% quarterly increase from R29,825 in February 2026.

These stats reflect the average salary paid to employees in the formal, non-agricultural sector, which encompasses eight broad industries, including business services, mining, manufacturing, and transport.

Importantly, the 4.1% increase is lower than the inflation rate of 4.5% captured in May, meaning that consumer spending power actually decreased during the period under review.

Unfortunately for motorists, the average salary is barely enough to afford a car nowadays, as there are only a handful of models that can be bought on a finance plan with an income of R30,000 per month.

According to WesBank, households should not spend more than a fifth of their salary on vehicle payments, which means the average person can, at most, get away with spending R6,000 per month on a new car.

Even this is an enormous cost relative to the person’s total income, especially when you factor in other expenses like fuel, insurance, and maintenance.

Be that as it may, if we assume the average motorist can afford to spend R6,000 per month on vehicle repayments, their car-buying budget should be around R275,000.

This is if a person takes out a 5-year/60-month contract with no deposit, bearing in mind that most car purchases made in South Africa do not include a deposit.

The prime interest rate is currently sitting at 10.75%, as the South African Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee hiked its policy rate by 25 basis points in September 2026.

A R275,000 car taken out on a 60-month loan with no deposit, at an interest rate of 10.75%, would net monthly repayments of R6,040.
