The BAIC B40 Plus is the newest 4×4 on the market, coming in at a South African starting price of R549,500.
This might sound steep for a relatively new brand on the local scene, but the B40 Plus brings plenty of off-road-focused equipment as standard.
At the bottom of the range, the SUV is fitted with a 2.0-litre, turbo-diesel engine that generates 110kW and 350Nm, connected to a six-speed manual transmission.
In addition, it puts power down through a permanent four-wheel-drive system with a central transfer case and rear differential lock.
While the B40 Plus’s 210mm of ground clearance is not a market-leading figure, it does boast a relatively aggressive approach angle (37°), break-over angle (23°), and departure angle (31°) to bolster its off-road performance.
A rugged-looking interior, LED lights, reclining rear seats, removable hardtop roof, and red tow hooks fitted to every model then make this new competitor a competent 4×4 with a well-rounded equipment list.
The market
There are many four-wheel-drive SUVs and bakkies in South Africa, but not many sell for less than R550,000.
