Vehicles with four-wheel drive are in high demand in South Africa as they are more versatile than cars that only turn two of their tyres and can even be regarded as safer since they have more grip on and off the tarmac in most conditions.
That being said, these systems cost more to manufacture and usually command higher asking prices as a result.
Fortunately, several manufacturers on the market have been able to bring down the window stickers of their 4x4s to a more reasonable level in recent years, with plenty of options now being available within the R500,000 bracket.
These include GWM, JAC, Mahindra, Renault, and fan-favourite Suzuki.
GWM and Mahindra both sell single and double-cab bakkies with the most affordable option between the two clocking in at R307,499.
JAC has two double cabs to choose from within its own stable, the utilitarian T6 and the lifestyle-oriented T8, pegged at R419,900 to R499,900, respectively.
From Renault, you can get the frugal Duster in four-wheel-drive spec at R465,999; while Suzuki brings to the table the Jimny in three-door and five-door styles from as little as R390,900, as well as the R438,900 Vitara, all three of which rotate both axles.
