The 3 best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa from 2023 – Pricing and specs

The 2023 sales figures for the new-vehicle market have finally been counted up, revealing that the VW Polo Vivo was the best-selling hatchback in South Africa.

The German brand’s entry-level hatch sealed the victory with a tally of 23,904 units sold, leaving a sizeable gap of 7,930 units between it and second place.

The runner-up in question was the Suzuki Swift, of course, which attracted a total of 15,974 customers, narrowly clinching the second-best position ahead of the Toyota Starlet which rounded out the year with 15,713 purchases.

These compact hatchbacks are likely at the top of the sales charts because they all have two things in common – being from reliable brands with sizeable dealer footprints and solid after-sales support, and sitting within the highly popular R200,000 price bracket.

What’s available

The VW Polo Vivo is on sale in South Africa in a variety of five specifications ranging from R259,400 up to R346,900.

Between these options, there are three engines available split across four equipment levels comprising Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and GT.

Standard fitments in the Trendline take the form of 14-inch steel wheels, a Bluetooth radio system, front electric windows, manual airconditioning, ABS, and two front airbags.

The Comfortline bolsters the spec sheet with 15-inch alloys, fog lights, a multifunction steering wheel, and a multi-info driver’s display; and on top of this, the Highline brings a central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and cruise control.

At the head of the Vivo family then sits the sporty GT which was on the receiving end of a unique sticker pack, 17-inch alloy wheels, and lowered suspension; as well as automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and front sports seats.

The engine options of the Polo Vivo range are detailed below:

Engine Output 0-100km/h Top speed Fuel cons.

The most affordable of the three front runners, the Suzuki Swift is on offer to local buyers in seven guises including two “hot hatch” models. Pricing for the Japanese hatch is pegged at R205,900 for the base GA spec and goes as high as R455,900 for the athletic Sport version.

Nice-to-haves in the most basic Swift GA encompass a multi-information driver’s display, all-round electric windows, manual airconditioning, rear parking sensors, ABS with brake assist, two front airbags, and 14-inch steel wheels; whereas the mid-range GL is further treated to a multifunction steering wheel, a Bluetooth radio system, front fog lamps, and hill-hold control in the automatic model.

Stepping up to the GLX additionally brings 15-inch alloy wheels, a leather steering wheel, keyless entry and start, climate control, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reverse camera, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat.
