MPVs, otherwise known as multi-purpose vehicles, are an incredibly useful type of car that usually offer more than the standard five-seat arrangement of other passenger vehicles.
They can carry a lot more than most cars thanks to the ability to remove or fold the back seats, and several models are even offered in a commercial-focused format functioning as a panel van ideal for small businesses.
There are currently six brands that have at least one MPV for sale in South Africa for less than half a million rand with one brand – Suzuki – having two different options to choose from for a total of seven relatively affordable models.
The cheapest MPV in the country is the Renault Triber at R228,999, marking it as the barrier-to-entry price needed by anyone in need of a car with seven seats.
This is followed by the twin pair of the Suzuki Ertiga and Toyota Rumion, and another Suzuki with the XL6, which is positioned as a more premium alternative to the Ertiga sporting six seats instead of seven.
Also on the list are the Mitsubishi Xpander, the VW Caddy Kombi, and the Opel Combo.
