Double cabs competing against the updated Toyota Land Cruiser in South Africa

Toyota has officially launched the updated Land Cruiser 79 bakkie in South Africa, giving it a fresh look and a new engine option.

Motorists in need of a double cab now have four options to choose from, with pricing as follows:

  • Toyota Land Cruiser 79 4.0 V6 DC – R864,600
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 79 4.2D DC – R920,800
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 79 2.8GD-6 DC – R1,009,000
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 79 4.5D-4D V8 DC – R1,039,200

Each of these units is defined by its engine, with the newcomer being the brand’s familiar 2.8-litre, GD-6 turbo-diesel.

You can see how each of these systems compares in the table below:

Engine Gearbox Power Fuel cons. Towing cap.
2.8l turbo-diesel 6-speed auto 150kW/500Nm 9.7l/100km 3,500kg
4.0l V6 petrol 5-speed manual 170kW/360Nm 14.4l/100km 1,500kg
4.2l diesel 5-speed manual 96kW/285Nm 12.2l/100km 1,500kg
4.5l V8 turbo-diesel 5-speed manual 151kW/430Nm 11.9l/100km 3,500kg

Every Land Cruiser (LC) has a selectable 4WD system with both front and rear differential locks, and the four-door models can carry up to 920kg in the bed.

Standard equipment on every model includes 16-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lamps, fabric upholstery, a manual aircon, electric windows, two speakers, a 12V socket, remote central locking, ABS, and two airbags.

The automatic models also receive several assistance features comprising electronic brake-force distribution, hill-start and descent control, traction control, vehicle stability control, and braking assist

Picking up either the V8 or the GD-6 will then throw in a leather steering wheel, a USB port, and a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth and navigation functions.
