Double cabs competing against the R400,000 JAC T8 in South Africa

JAC has launched a new, more affordable Lux version of its T8 bakkie in South Africa that costs R65,000 less than the Super Lux model.

At a new starting price of R399,900the T8 gets the accolade of being one of the most affordable double cabs in the country.

Available in 4×2 and 4×4, the Lux employs a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine with 104kW and 320Nm, which connects to a six-speed manual gearbox.

It reports an average fuel consumption of 7.8l/100km and can carry 900kg in the back and tow up to 2,000kg.

The 4×4 units, which start at R449,900, feature a time-sharing four-wheel-drive system that can switch between 2H and 4H modes at speeds of up to 80km/h, and they also get a rear differential lock and a low-range setting.

Standard equipment on the Chinese double cab includes xenon headlamps, a rear style bar, 18-inch alloy rims, LED daytime running lights, manual aircon, all-round electric windows, leather seats, a multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, a reverse camera, rear parking sensors, remote keyless entry, and a 9.0-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Each purchase carries a 5-year/100,000km warranty and a 5-year/100,000km service plan.

A stand-out price point

The JAC T8’s new starting price makes it a stand-out option in South Africa’s bakkie landscape, as only two other automakers have models with comparable prices.

GWM and Mahindra have affordable units, but you can expect to pay a much higher premium for brands like Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Isuzu, which all go for more than R500,000 at a minimum.

These are the cheapest double cab bakkies from other brands that are competing with the JAC T8.
