Every sedan you can buy under R300,000 in South Africa

Sedans are not as popular as they used to be, which is reflected by the fact that there are only six models left in South Africa with a price tag under R300,000.

The sleek body style has gone out of fashion over the last few years as buyers have gravitated towards SUVs and their smaller crossover counterparts.

At the same time, high inflation rates have seen the ownership costs of new models soar, and while hatchbacks have managed to maintain a decent market share owing to their niche as the most affordable body type, sedans have seen far less interest in recent times, leading to the entry-level market being all but abandoned by most carmakers.

Premium marques like Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz continue to sell popular nameplates like the A4, 3 Series, and C-Class, respectively, but for anyone on a budget, your choice is now limited to Proton, Honda, Suzuki, Hyundai, and Kia.

The cheapest sedan in South Africa right now is the Malaysian Proton Saga, which clocks in at a starting rate of R209,900.

Suzuki, meanwhile, is the only manufacturer on the list with two models – the Dzire and Ciaz – proving once again that it is one of the brands most committed to affordability.

Honda still sells the Amaze, and Hyundai actually has a new option in the form of the Grand i10, as a sedan silhouette was added to the catalogue when the hatchback was updated last year.

Finally, Kia has one entry with the Pegas, which falls just short of our cut-off point with a sticker of R292,995.
