Most popular used cars in South Africa – With pricing

The Ford Ranger is the go-to vehicle for motorists browsing pre-owned sites, as no less than 1,570 units were sold in June 2024.

This is a slight decrease from the numbers the bakkie managed to pull in May, though the Ranger still has a comfortable lead as the most popular used car in South Africa, according to AutoTrader’s latest sales report.

In second place is the Ranger’s rival, the Toyota Hilux, which saw a small improvement to reach 1,280 sales last month.

The VW Polo and Polo Vivo are still the top pick for passenger models in South Africa, as the pair landed in third and fourth place on the top-seller ranks with 1,254 and 1,092 units moved, respectively.

Taking the final post in the top five is another Toyota with the Fortuner SUV, which gained a total of 678 customers.

Sixth place is occupied by a premium brand with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, as it managed to find 505 new owners in June.

The Suzuki Swift is another popular entry with 498 units, as is the BMW 3 Series, which saw 440 success stories in the used-car lot.

The second-to-last entry is the Nissan NP200, which still sold as many as 418 units despite being discontinued this April.

Finally, there’s the Kia Picanto, which replaced the Isuzu D-Max last month by achieving 378 sales.

Overall, the used-car market sold 27,750 units in June, amounting to a total of R11.3 billion.

While this is still a substantial sum, it marks a 6.4% year-on-year decline compared to what was achieved in 2023, reflecting the financial burden currently being felt by consumers, said AutoTrader.
