South Africa is a bakkie-loving country, and nowhere is it more visible than in the sheer number of options buyers have on the new market.
If you want to buy a “pickup” in South Africa right now, you have 16 manufacturers to choose from offering no fewer than 248 total bakkie variants split across 168 double cabs (DC), 18 extended cabs (EC), and 62 single cabs (SC).
The most variety is provided by Toyota, with its 45-strong Hilux portfolio that comprises six EC, 15 SC, and 24 DC models.
Not that close behind it is Isuzu with 33 derivatives of the D-Max, narrowly pipping Mahindra’s Pik Up catalogue with 32 specifications.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are three bakkies on the market with only one model in the family – the Jeep Gladiator, Mahindra Bolero, and Maxus T90 EV.
With these vehicles being so popular in South Africa, several automakers saw it fit to add to the already vast selection in the country in recent times.
This year alone, we got the new Foton Tunland G7, the GWM P500, and the LDV T60, which account for a collective 19 units.
Another handful are in the pipeline to reach our shores in the near future.
The biggest ones to look out for include the bulky Foton Tunland G9 and V9, the next-gen Mitsubishi Triton, more affordable versions of the Peugeot Landtrek, and a turbo-petrol VW Amarok.
We also had to say goodbye to a few well-known nameplates in recent times namely the Mazda BT-50 and Nissan NP200, which were sold in four and two specifications, respectively.
The BT-50 was pulled from the market due to import costs that pushed the bakkie’s price to uncompetitive levels; whereas the NP200’s ageing design, which neared 16 years old, was cited as the reason for its discontinuation.
