Affordable crossovers competing against the new Toyota Starlet Cross in South Africa

Toyota has officially launched the Starlet Cross in South Africa, taking its place as the brand’s new entry-level SUV.

The Cross is available in four specifications, with prices ranging from R299,900 to R359,300.

All four versions run on the same 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which sends 77kW and 138Nm to the front wheels.

Buyers have a choice of either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox, and fuel consumption ranges between 5.6-5.8l/100km, depending on the selected specification.

The compact SUV is fitted with LED daytime running lights and 16-inch alloy wheels, and can be optionally had with a two-tone black roof.

Equipment is spread across two trim levels – XS and XR – with the former getting a leather multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, a 7-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four speakers, rear parking sensors, a reverse camera, cruise control, vehicle stability control, hill assist, ABS, two front airbags, and Toyota Connect support.

The XR units then add auto-folding side mirrors, keyless entry and start, an electrochromic rearview mirror, a multi-information driver’s display, a wireless charger, height adjustment for the driver’s seat, a heads-up display, 360-degree cameras, a larger 9-inch media system, two additional speakers, and four extra airbags.

Each purchase of the Starlet Cross comes with a 3-year/100,000km warranty and a 4-services/60,000km service plan.
