Best-selling bakkies in South Africa

The Toyota Hilux is holding onto its title as South Africa’s favourite bakkie, though its sales did take a noticeable hit this August.

The Hilux moved 2,527 units last month, a decline of 494 sales compared to what it achieved in July.

Consequently, the gap between it and the Ford Ranger was much closer this time around, as the Blue Oval sold a respectable 2,312 examples.

The Isuzu D-Max, meanwhile, pulled in almost identical numbers to what it managed the month before with 1,634 sales, helping it to secure third place.

It was a similar story with the Mahindra Pik Up, which only sold 10 units less than last month to end with 780 purchases.

Next is the Nissan Navara, which was the final model to crack the top five with 468 new customers.

The big change to the top 10 this time around is the Nissan NP200, which dropped down from sixth to ninth place with 132 sales – likely as an indication that the discontinued bakkie’s remaining stock has nearly been exhausted.

The VW Amarok therefore jumped up to sixth place with 346 sales, followed by the Toyota Land Cruiser 79 and GWM P-Series with 234 and 205 units, respectively.

The Peugeot Landtrek, meanwhile, fell out of the top 10 to be replaced by the GWM Steed with 81 showroom victories.

Taken as a whole, the top 10 bakkies sold 8,719 units, or 81.4% of the 10,709 light commercial vehicles moved in South Africa in August 2024.
