High-end 4x4s competing against the new GWM Tank 500 in South Africa

GWM’s has launched its second Tank 4×4 in the country in the form of the new 500.

A larger sibling to the Tank 300 that debuted in February, the 500 is marketed as a luxury seven-seater with a starting price of R1,222,900.

It benefits from a hybrid powertrain consisting of a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine paired with an electric motor, giving it a combined output of 255kW and 648Nm.

Factoring in the nine-speed automatic gearbox, the SUV manages an average fuel consumption of 8.4l/100km.

As for its off-road credentials, the Tank uses an electronic four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and a rear diff lock.

It also provides 10 different driving and terrain modes for Standard, Economic, Sport, Expert, Snow, Mud, Sand, Irregular, Rock, and Mountain.

There’s underbody protection for the chassis, and two functions for Crawl Control (off-road cruise control) and Tank Turn, which locks the inside back wheel to allow the vehicle to make much tighter turns.

Equipment on the 500 comprises automatic LED headlights and daytime running lights, 20-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry and start, electronically adjustable leather seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions; a leather multifunction steering wheel with paddle shifters, tri-zone climate control, a 12-speaker Infinity stereo, a wireless charger, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Assistance items, meanwhile, comprise adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, tyre-pressure monitoring, a 360-degree camera system, front and rear parking sensors, cross-traffic alert, hill descent control, and lane-keep assist.

Each purchase comes with a 7-year/200,000km warranty, a 5-year/75,000km service plan, 7-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance, and an additional 8-year/150,000km hybrid battery warranty.
