The next-gen Ford Mustang GT is almost here, as the symbol of American muscle is scheduled to land in South Africa next month.
The company recently announced that the sports car will go on sale this October at a starting price of R1.3 million.
Under the hood is a 5.0-litre, naturally aspirated Coyote V8 petrol engine, which spits out an impressive 328kW and 540Nm.
A 10-speed automatic gearbox sends this power down to the rear wheels, letting it sprint to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds before capping out at 250km/h.
In South Africa, the coupe will be bundled with the Performance Pack, which brings several enhancements from a front suspension tower brace to a Torsen limited-slip differential, MagneRide active suspension, wider rear wheels and tyres, and 390mm front and 355mm rear Brembo brakes.
There are also brake ducts for better cooling, an auxiliary engine oil cooler, an active valve performance exhaust with adjustable volume, and a segment-first electronic drift brake that lets owners slide around with the style of an old-school mechanical handbrake.
Equipment on the Mustang includes LED headlights, a flat-bottom Racing steering wheel, heated and ventilated seats, leather upholstery, a wireless charger, automatic climate control, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo, and a dual-curved display comprised of a 12.4-inch Unreal Engine instrument cluster and a 13.2-inch Sync4 infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Assistance functions include intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, evasive steer assist, reverse brake assist, speed sign recognition, and an Active Pothole Mitigation function that adjusts the suspension in response to road hazards to minimize damage.
The Ford Mustang GT will be sold with a 4-year/120,000km warranty, a 4-year/unlimited-kilometre roadside assistance plan, and an optional service plan.
Bring it on
Sadly, the Ford Mustang is a rather unique entry in South Africa given that our market is underserved when it comes to full-on American muscle cars.
That being said, there are a number of high-performance coupes and sedans that the Blue Oval’s latest creation will take on once it arrives in October, as detailed below.
