Used hybrids are flying off the shelves in South Africa – Here’s what buyers are paying

Motorists are spending R450,000 on average to take home the most popular used hybrid car in South Africa.

This title belongs to the Toyota Corolla Cross, which sold at least 333 examples in the first half of 2024, according to AutoTrader.

The classifieds platform recently published its Mid Year Car Industry Report for the first six months of the year, revealing the top 10 most sought-after hybrids in the country.

The Cross likely won’t come as a surprise to many, given that it is also the best-selling hybrid on the new-car market thanks to its status as the nation’s most affordable semi-electric vehicle.

In fact, three of the top 10 slots are taken by Toyota, with the other two going to the Rav4, and the Corolla hatch and sedan, which are grouped together as AutoTrader does not have separate data for each body style.

Haval is another strong choice, as both the Jolion and H6 are on the list, and Lexus actually has two entries with the UX and RX, indicating that there is a segment of motorists eager to pick up a premium model with a frugal power source at a bargain price point.

Speaking of, the most expensive hybrid on the chart is the BMW i8, which still commands a sticker of over R1 million despite being around seven years old on average.

The only other automaker to make the list is Volvo, which is another obvious choice given the brand’s shift towards electric models, and both the XC60 and XC90 managed to make the cut.

One interesting thing to take note of is that the mileage of most of the hybrids in the top 10 is actually rather low, as only three units had an odometre reading over 20,000km.
