The used-car market took a hit in August 2024, with sales declining by 8.2% compared to the same month last year.
New data from AutoTrader shows that 31,877 vehicles were purchased on the platform last month and that total revenue dropped by 6.8% year-on-year to reach R13 billion.
As for the most popular models, the Ford Ranger is still ruling the roost as the nation’s favourite pre-owned set of wheels with 1,930 sales.
The Toyota Hilux isn’t far behind, as 1,423 units found new owners in August.
The next two spots were taken by the hatchback duo of the VW Polo and Polo Vivo, which moved 1,329 and 1,153 units, respectively.
Taking up the final position in the top five was the Toyota Fortuner, which sold 730 models.
The top 10 then saw a shake-up with the Suzuki Swift moving up to sixth with 598 sales, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class dropped to seventh with 549 customers.
Next is the Nissan NP200, which is still seeing a great deal of interest following its discontinuation with 513 purchases.
The BMW 3 Series sold a respectable 493 units, and the final spot on the list saw a change with the Isuzu D-Max falling out in favour of the Toyota Starlet with its 482 takers.
Looking at the sector as a whole, the average price of a second-hand car in August was R233,635, with an age of two years or less.
Toyota, VW, and Ford are still the top-performing brands, but Suzuki and Kia actually saw the biggest year-on-year growth at a rate of 40% and 11%, respectively.
