Chery is getting ready to launch a new model that will split the difference between its entry- and mid-level SUVs in South Africa.
The incoming unit, known simply as the Cross, is scheduled to arrive just over a month from now in November 2024.
What to expect
The Chery Cross is a new mid-range crossover that will straddle the line between the Tiggo 4 Pro and Tiggo 7 Pro when it lands later this year.
A company representative recently confirmed to TopAuto that it is looking at a speculative price point of around R490,000, though this will only be confirmed closer to its launch date.
To put this in perspective, the Tiggo 4 currently goes for anywhere from R279,900 and R415,900, while the Tiggo 7 retails for between R442,900 and R477,900, not including the more powerful Max variants, which go all the way up to R609,900.
Based on this initial price suggestion, the Cross seems like it will sell for quite the premium over the Tiggo 4 Pro, but this may hint at a larger reshuffling of the brand’s catalogue.
Chery’s competitor Haval split its popular Jolion series in the base City and top-spec Pro lines earlier this year, and it’s possible that Chery may be attempting to do something similar with the Tiggo 4 and the Cross.
The Chinese automaker has also previously stated that its Max units are the most popular versions of the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8, so it’s possible that the two regular Tiggo 7 Pro models could be dropped to make way for the Cross.
Information divulged by Chery thus far shows that the Cross is fitted with the same 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine found in the top-end Tiggo 4 and base Tiggo 7, which pumps out 108kW and 210Nm, matched exclusively with a six-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The Chery Cross was shown off to the public at this year’s Festival of Motoring in Gauteng, but the company has yet to announce its full specification list aside from a few features like a wireless charging pad and a pair of 10.25-inch screens.
However, considering that this will essentially function as a premium Tiggo 4 Pro, it’s reasonable to assume that it will have much of the same kit.
In which case, the upcoming Chery SUV is likely to bring luxuries like dual-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera, keyless entry and start, cruise control, automatic LED headlights, ambient lighting, artificial leather upholstery, an electric driver’s seat, and six speakers.
