How much it costs to drive from Joburg to Durban at R21 per litre

Anyone planning to make the trip from Johannesburg to Durban can expect to pay at least R1,883 to drive there and back, based on the current price of petrol.

As we head into summer, more and more people will be making the journey from the country’s financial hub to the sunny coastline, but doing so will cost a pretty penny.

City to coast at R21 per litre

Assuming that individuals will begin in central Gauteng, the drive to the shorefront in Durban will be roughly 584km long and take around six hours.

Thankfully, petrol prices have been on the decline for much of 2024, and rates are currently sitting at a three-year low this October with 95 octane costing R21.05 per litre.

As such, this is how much you can expect to budget for petrol based on this route based on your car’s fuel efficiency:

Efficiency Fuel needed One-way trip Return trip
5.0l/100km 29.20 litres R615 R1,229
6.0l/100km 35.04 litres R738 R1,475
7.0l/100km 40.88 litres R861 R1,721
8.0l/100km 46.72 litres R983 R1,967
9.0l/100km 52.56 litres R1,106 R2,213
10.0l/100km 58.40 litres R1,229 R2,459
11.0l/100km 64.24 litres R1,352 R2,705
12.0l/100km 70.08 litres R1,475 R2,950
13.0l/100km 75.92 litres R1,598 R3,196

Of course, the fuel bill is only half the story, as we still have to account for the five toll plazas dotted along the route.

These are the up-to-date fees for each of the toll booths:

  • Mooi – R66
  • Wilge – R88
  • Tugela – R94
  • De Hoek – R63
  • Marian Hill – R15.50

Tallying up these five checkpoints adds another R326.50 to our tab.

One bit of good news is that e-tolls no longer factor into the equation, as the electronic tolls were officially shut down this April.

When we combine the fuel and standard toll fees, travelers are looking at a one-way cost of between R941.50 and R1,924.50 to get to Durban.

Ultimately, this means you can expect to pay anywhere from R1,883 to R3,849 for a holiday to and from the beach, depending on your car’s economy.
