Electric vehicles (EVs) are slowly but surely growing their larger presence in South Africa’s used market, and they’re pretty popular among those who can afford them.
Admittedly, the selection of models is still relatively small as several automakers have yet to introduce any of their battery-powered cars to our roads.
Furthermore, many of the EVs we do have access to are quite pricey, as most of them belong to premium brands like Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, and Volvo.
However, this hasn’t stopped motorists from trying to find a good deal in the pre-owned space, as evidenced by the latest sales data from AutoTrader.
The classifieds platform recently published its Mid Year Car Industry Report, detailing the top 10 most popular used electric cars for the first half of 2024.
Surprisingly, the number one pick was the BMW iX, which cost owners an average of R1,362,892.
BMW is clearly a fan-favourite badge in South Africa regardless of the powertrain, as four of the top 10 slots were filled by the Munich-based carmaker, including the i3 hatchback, the iX3 SUV, and the i4 sedan.
The other top brand for EVs is Volvo, as all three of its electrified crossovers made it into the top 10.
Most buyers leaned towards the XC40, though the EX30 and C40 also saw a lot of interest despite the fact that the cheapest option sold for an average of R958,043.
Other entries on the list included the Mini Cooper SE, the Audi e-tron, and the Jaguar I-Pace.
The BMW i3 was the cheapest model in the top 10, going for around R524,914, though the Mini Cooper wasn’t far behind at R540,057.
On the other end of the scale, the Audi e-tron still commands an impressive price tag of R1,412,120, making it the most expensive used EV of the group.
