Midsize SUVs are a popular segment in South Africa, but their prices have unfortunately gone up a lot over the last few years.
There are only three SUVs on the market that fall under R500,000, two of which are from China while the last one is from India.
Jetour claims to have the most accessible midsize vehicle in South Africa with the recently launched Dashing, which clocks in at R439,900.
The other relatively affordable options are the Haval H6 and Mahindra XUV700, both of which fall just shy of half a million rand.
Beyond these three units, you will have to spend quite a lot to pick up a mid to large-sized SUV from any carmaker in the country, including brands that are ostensibly mass-market.
The most affordable model from a premium legacy carmaker in South Africa is the Lexus NX at R988,400, as you’ll have to go over R1 million to get anything from Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, or Jaguar these days.
There’s also the new Omoda C9, which is meant to be a rival to favourites like the BMW X3 or Audi Q5, but is substantially cheaper at R785,900.
Another notable entry is the Kia Sportage, which, thanks to its diesel powerplant, has the best fuel consumption of any base model on the list at just 5.0l/100km.
A few midsize SUVs, including the XUV700, Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Nissan X-Trail, and Honda CR-V, also offer up to seven seats.
