Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo is the most popular hatchback in South Africa, based on its strong sales performance in October 2024.

It was a good month for the German carmaker overall, as the Vivo managed to place first with 2,297 units while the regular Polo came in second with 1,425 units.

Another big winner last month was Toyota, as the Starlet shot up from seventh to third place thanks to 1,358 purchases.

A consequence of this is that the Hyundai Grand i10 dropped from second to fourth despite a considerable uptick in sales, going from 1,062 to 1,348 customers.

Speaking of sales improvements, the next-gen Suzuki Swift has officially arrived and is already making bank for the automaker as Swift sales jumped from 539 to 1,179 in October – 985 of which were for the newest evolution of the hatchback.

Outside the top five, the Renault Kwid finished sixth with 934 units moved, followed by the Toyota Vitz and the Suzuki Baleno which were only four units apart – the former ending with 676 while the latter had 672.

The final two slots in the top 10 were taken by the Hyundai i20, which achieved 328 sales, as well as the Suzuki S-Presso with its 277 showroom victories.

Taking a look at the segment as a whole, the 10 best-performing hatchbacks accounted for a combined 10,494 sales, or 21.8% of the 47,942 vehicles purchased in South Africa last month.
