Best-selling used cars in South Africa right now – With pricing

October has proven to be a great month for the used-car industry in South Africa, with a 22.2% increase in sales compared to September.

A total of 34,968 units were sold during this time, amounting to a combined R14.09 billion in revenue for the sector, according to data from AutoTrader.

While no new models broke into the list of the top 10 best-sellers, the existing roster all saw an appreciable uptick in purchases last month.

The Ford Ranger is still standing as the top choice for pre-owned shoppers with 2,081 units moved, but its rival – the Toyota Hilux – was actually overtaken by the VW Polo for the first time in several months.

As a result, the Polo is now in second place with 1,679 transactions, while the Hilux is in third with 1,664.

Up next was the entry-level Polo Vivo, which held onto fourth place thanks to 1,402 customers taking one of these hatchbacks home.

Likewise, the Toyota Fortuner is still the preferred second-hand SUV, ending in fifth with 737 purchases.

The other big change in October is that the Suzuki Swift and Mercedes-Benz C-Class swapped places, with the former moving up to sixth with 635 sales while the latter dropped down to eighth with 563 units.

The Nissan NP200, meanwhile, is unchanged from September and is still in seventh thanks to 608 motorists in need of an affordable workhorse.

The final two spots were filled by the BMW 3 Series and Toyota Starlet with 561 and 521 buyers, respectively.

Compact hatchbacks are evidently the biggest craze in the used-car scene at the moment, as the Swift, Vivo, and Starlet all saw a year-on-year sales improvement of well over 40%.

On the other hand, demand for the Fortuner, 3 Series, and C-Class waned by up to 16.5% over the same period, reflecting a consumer shift towards more affordable transport.
