Classic Ferraris you can buy in South Africa – and how much they cost

The vintage car market has been booming recently and models from Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini are reaping the benefits.

According to Leon Strumpher, Portfolio Manager at Sanlam Private Wealth, classic cars have appreciated more in the past 20 years than art and jewellery.

However, Strumpher adds that investing in classic cars is no easy matter, as “not all cars are equal”.

“It takes deep knowledge of the industry and a lot of homework to know which ones will appreciate in value.”

“Investment cars vary dramatically in price tag and returns, depending on their rarity and condition, and the size of the buyer’s pocket.”

The cars

When buying a classic car, a big slice of the price tag goes into the “story” behind it.

For example: in March 2021, a Ferrari 275 GTB/4 sold for $2,475,000. In 2014, when the name Steve McQueen was attached to the same model, it sold for a whopping $10,175,000.

Brands with strong heritage, like Ferrari, will also usually fetch high prices at auction.

Out of all the cars sold at auction for more than $5 million, 59% of them have carried the Ferrari badge.

Strumpher said that based on this, a potential investment opportunity for South Africans is a pre-millennium V8 Ferrari – including a 308 GTB/GTS or F355 Berlinetta/Spider.

According to Strumpher: “South Africa still has some fine examples” of these cars on offer.
