Best-selling hatchbacks in South Africa

The VW Polo Vivo had a fantastic month of sales in November 2024, falling shy of the coveted 3,000 mark by a single unit.

This was enough for the hatchback to claim the top spot as South Africa’s favourite passenger car, beating out other popular options like the Toyota Hilux.

Hatchbacks in general had a solid month, as the Suzuki Swift leaped from fifth to second place with 1,776 units sold, no doubt because the next-gen models have started flying off the proverbial shelf.

Another winner in November was the Hyundai Grand i10, which overtook the Toyota Starlet to place third with 1,296 purchases compared to the latter’s 1,238.

The final position in the top five was then taken by the VW Polo, which just managed to crack the 1,000-unit milestone by three sales.

After this came the Renault Kwid with 692 buyers, followed by the Suzuki Baleno with 574 purchases – beating out the Toyota Vitz for seventh place.

Consequently, the Vitz is now sitting in the eighth spot with 407 registrations recorded, while the Hyundai i20 maintained its standing in ninth with 379 examples rolling off the showroom floor.

Finally, there’s the affordable Suzuki S-Presso, which rounded out the top 10 with 213 dealership victories.

The top 10 hatchbacks collectively sold 10,577 units in November 2024 – representing 21.7% of all vehicle sales in the country.
