What it costs to drive from Joburg to the Kruger Park this December

It will cost motorists at least R1,414 to drive from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park this December, according to calculations done by TopAuto.
The holiday season has finally arrived, and many households are no doubt making plans to visit one of the many iconic South African National (SAN) Parks to get away from the city and enjoy the great outdoors.
The most famous SANPark is, of course, the Kruger, which is a hotspot destination for both local and international tourists eager to see Africa’s wildlife.
The Kruger is located to the east of South Africa stretching across the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, meaning that families coming from one of the nation’s larger metropolitan hubs will likely either be driving from Gauteng, or flying to O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and renting a car to get to the park.
What it costs
Using the airport as a general starting point for anyone making the car trip from Joburg, the route to the Kruger National Park will be approximately 392km and take four and a half hours to complete.
This assumes that we use the fastest route via the N12 and N4 to reach Malelane, one of the area’s more popular entrances.
As for the fuel cost, petrol 95 is currently retailing for R21.47 per litre following the latest adjustments this December.
The following table shows how much you will spend on petrol to make the trip, based on your car’s average fuel economy.
Efficiency | Fuel needed | One-way trip | Return trip |
5.0l/100km | 19.60 litres | R421 | R842 |
6.0l/100km | 23.52 litres | R505 | R1,010 |
7.0l/100km | 27.44 litres | R589 | R1,178 |
8.0l/100km | 31.36 litres | R673 | R1,346 |
9.0l/100km | 35.28 litres | R757 | R1,514 |
10.0l/100km | 39.20 litres | R842 | R1,684 |
11.0l/100km | 43.12 litres | R926 | R1,852 |
12.0l/100km | 47.04 litres | R1,010 | R2,020 |
13.0l/100km | 50.96 litres | R1,094 | R2,188 |
Unfortunately, fuel is not the only travel-related expense, as there are four toll booths located along the N4.
These are the up-to-date prices for each toll gate on the way to Kruger:
- Middelburg – R79
- Machado – R118
- Nkomazi – R89
Adding them together means road users will be spending an extra R286 to get to their destination, which doubles to R572 for the journey home.
Combined with the fuel tab, South Africans can expect to pay anywhere from R1,414 to R2,760 to drive to the Kruger and back this festive season.
