The Toyota Hilux reclaimed its lead as the best-selling car in South Africa in December 2024 after briefly ceding this accolade to the VW Polo Vivo the month prior.
The Hilux took top honours with an impressive sales tally of 2,926 units. While the Vivo still made off with second place, it was noticeably far behind the Toyota with its 1,946 sales.
Third place was awarded to the Ford Ranger which scraped together 1,924 paying customers, with the Toyota Corolla Cross trailing in fourth thanks to 1,526 registrations.
The new Suzuki Swift continued to excel, bringing in 1,376 sales for the brand which netted it fifth place overall on the best-sellers ranks.
Next up was the Toyota Fortuner with 1,343 transactions in sixth position, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 in seventh with 1,301 purchases, and yet another Toyota, the Starlet, in eighth owing to its 1,259 buyers.
The final bakkie on the list, the Isuzu D-Max, sat in the ninth spot with 1,086 units moved.
The Chinese rivals of Haval and Chery continued to trade blows during the final month of 2024.
This time around, the Haval Jolion came out on top with a sales total of 1,074 units, a mere 15 more than the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro.
Dipping below 1,000 units for the first time, the VW Polo ranked 12th in December with 879 models shifted, with the Kia Sonet coming in at 13th with 822 models.
The Toyota Starlet Cross scooped up 14th with 759 examples sold, just ahead of its architectural twin, the Suzuki Fronx, which saw 704 buyers.
The 16th spot was also claimed by a Suzuki, the Ertiga MPV, which attracted 602 clients; while Toyota once more featured in 17th in the form of the Urban Cruiser, which scored 586 sales.
Closing out the top 20 were the Mahindra XUV 3X0, Renault Triber, and Nissan Magnite with 543, 505, and 484 purchases, respectively.
Looking at the bigger picture, these consumer favourites accounted for an impressive 55%, or 22,704 units, of the 41,273 new vehicles sold in South Africa in December.
