The new BMW launching in South Africa very soon

BMW fans won’t have to wait new long for the brand’s latest model, as the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is coming to South Africa in the near future.

The company confirmed in late 2024 that the new 2 Series will appear in showrooms within the first half of 2025.

What to expect

The Gran Coupe is essentially the sedan alternative to the new 1 Series hatchback, which launched in South Africa at the end of 2024.

This means buyers can expect one of two engines at release, starting with the 218.

This takes the form of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol block, which sends a total of 115kW and 230Nm down to the front wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

As a result, the 218 can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 8.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 226km/h.

For those who could do with a bit more power, you’ll have to turn to the flagship M235 which ups the ante with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mill with a greater 225kW and 450Nm.

It has the same gearbox, but features the xDrive all-wheel-drive system for better power delivery and control out on the track, and the combination of all these factors means that the M235 can rocket to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds before capping out at 250km/h.

Beyond its performance, the 2 Series has seen a dramatic visual overhaul to match its hatchback sibling.

At the front, the iconic kidney grille is flanked by a new set of LED headlights and slim vertical daytime running lights, which can be upgraded to adaptive Matrix headlights at an additional cost.

The coupe body style means the roofline is sleeker than the 1 Series, and the side profile is accentuated by a new set of light-alloy wheels that start at 17 inches in diametre.

As for the back, there’s a pair of redesigned LED taillights, and the exhaust pipes are invisibly integrated behind the bumper on the standard models.

There will also be nine different colour options at launch, which can be further enhanced with an optional contrasting black roof.

Moving inside, the Gran Coupe is continuing BMW’s shift towards renewable materials with a leather-free upholstery, though this can be swapped out for a Veganza/Alcantara trim with contrast stitching on request.

The new seats have heating and electronic adjustment, and can be upgraded to M Sports seats with a massage function and lumbar support.

Of course, the biggest change is the dashboard, which features a new dual curved display comprising a 10.25-inch driver monitor and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen

The new screens are running the brand’s latest Operating System 9, which comes with voice commands, BMW Maps with cloud-based navigation, over-the-air software updates, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Other equipment includes automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and driving assistance functions such as front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, exit warning, traffic sign recognition, and a Parking Assistant with a surround-view camera and parking sensors.

On top of all of this, the M235 units come standard with the M Sport package, which adds adaptive M suspension, 18-inch alloys, quad tailpipes, and an M leather sports steering wheel with paddle shifters to the package.

BMW has yet to disclose the pricing for the new 2 Series Gran Coupe, but expect prices to start just north of the 1 Series, which currently retails for between R713,395 and R982,767.
