March was the best month for new-car sales in South Africa in two years, with a whopping 49,493 units finding new owners.
The Toyota Hilux as usual accounted for the biggest share of these transactions at a healthy 2,923 units sold.
Trailing the Toyota was the Isuzu D-Max in second with 2,250 purchases, trumping the Ford Ranger in third which saw 2,179 registrations.
The first passenger car on the list, the VW Polo Vivo, landed in fourth place owing to its 1,703 showroom successes, followed by the evergreen Suzuki Swift which racked up 1,608 sales.
In sixth was the Toyota Corolla Cross which mustered a very respectable 1,570 buyers, after which came the Hyundai Grand i10 with 1,504 and Nissan Magnite with 1,443 customers.
The last bakkie in the top 10, the Mahindra Pik Up, then grabbed ninth with 1,215 sales.
It was a fierce battle for who’d claim the final spot in the top 10 between the Chinese rivals of Haval and Chery, though in the end, neither managed to pip the other.
The Haval Jolion and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro both registered exactly 1,102 sales in March, forcing them to share the tenth position.
Twelfth once again went to a Toyota in the form of the Starlet, which saw 1,075 units roll off showroom floors.
Meanwhile, the Suzuki Fronx landed up in between the Starlet and its bigger brother, the Starlet Cross.
The Fronx recorded 1,052 purchases during the month which saw it achieving 13th place, while the Starlet Cross drove away with 1,052 customers in 14th place.
In 15th was the ever-popular VW Polo with 932 transactions, the Nissan Navara occupied 16th with 835, and the Kia Sonet sat in 17th with 823.
The final three in the top 20 were the Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra XUV 3X0, and the Suzuki Ertiga, which reported 793, 774, and 749 buyers, respectively.
In total, the top 20 performers last month accounted for a sizeable 26,589 purchases, or 54% of all the vehicles sold in South Africa.
